What is the best laptop for a university student in Kenya? For most students it is an Ex-UK business laptop like the Lenovo ThinkPad T480s (from KSh 27,000): 8th Gen Core i5, an SSD, a great keyboard and Windows 11 Pro. On a tight budget the HP EliteBook 840 G3 (KSh 24,999) is the best value, and if you only need a browser the HP Chromebook 14 G5 (KSh 9,999) is the cheapest option. Engineering, design and media students should look at a 16GB machine or the Lenovo LOQ with RTX graphics.

The picks in detail
1. Lenovo ThinkPad T480s, from KSh 27,000
A slim, lightweight 14-inch ThinkPad with an 8th Gen Core i5 or i7, 8GB or 16GB RAM and a 256GB or 512GB SSD. It has ThinkPad's excellent keyboard for long assignments, a durable build and Windows 11 Pro pre-installed. Ex-UK stock in excellent condition.
2. HP EliteBook 840 G3, KSh 24,999
A thin, portable 14-inch business laptop with a Core i5-6300U, 8GB RAM and a 256GB SSD. Great value for notes, assignments and online classes. Note that it uses a 6th Gen processor, which Windows 11 does not officially support, so choose the T480s if you want long-term Windows updates.
3. Lenovo ThinkPad X13, from KSh 34,000
A compact 13-inch ThinkPad with a choice of 11th Gen Core i5, 10th Gen Core i7 or Ryzen 5, 8GB or 16GB RAM, and touchscreen or x360 convertible options. Easy to carry around campus all day.
4. HP EliteBook 840 G4 Touch, KSh 34,999
A thin and light 14-inch touchscreen EliteBook with a Core i7 and 16GB RAM, enough for coding, design software and heavy multitasking.
5. HP Chromebook 14 G5, KSh 9,999
A rugged Chromebook tested to MIL-STD 810G with an Intel Celeron and Chrome OS. Fine for Google Docs, research and online classes, but it cannot run Windows software.
6. Lenovo LOQ Gaming, from KSh 95,000
Dedicated NVIDIA RTX graphics (RTX 3050 to RTX 4060), 16GB RAM and a 512GB SSD on every model. The right choice for architecture, video editing, 3D work and gaming.
What to check before you buy
- SSD, not hard drive: an SSD makes a laptop start and open apps several times faster.
- RAM: 8GB is enough for most courses; choose 16GB for engineering, coding, design or video.
- Processor generation: Windows 11 officially supports Intel 8th Gen and newer.
- Battery and charger: on Ex-UK laptops, ask about battery health and make sure an original charger is included.
- Course software: check what your course needs. AutoCAD, MATLAB and Adobe apps need Windows or macOS, not a Chromebook.
