How to make sure your phone is genuine
- Check the IMEI. Dial *#06# and make sure the number matches the one on the box. Then verify it with the Communications Authority of Kenya's IMEI check before you pay.
- Ask for Kenya warranty. Imported "grey" phones often have no local warranty, so repairs become your cost.
- Check storage and RAM in Settings. Fake phones often claim more storage than they have.
- Get a proper receipt. Businesses should ask for an ETR / eTIMS receipt so they can claim VAT.
- Be wary of prices far below the market. If a new flagship is KSh 30,000 cheaper than everywhere else, it's likely refurbished, locked or fake.
4G or 5G?
5G coverage is growing in Nairobi and other major towns, and 5G phones now start from about KSh 21,500 (Samsung Galaxy F16 5G). If you plan to keep your phone for 3+ years, a 5G model is worth it. If you mostly use WhatsApp, M-Pesa and social media, a good 4G phone is still fine.
